Telekom Austria and Alcatel Combine Forces to Support Triple Play Services| July 26, 2006 | Business Telecom Services - Europe Analyst: Dustin Kehoe
On July 24th Telekom Austria signed an agreement with Alcatel to support its triple-play product portfolio (i.e., IPTV, IP telephony and high-speed Internet access). Under the terms, Alcatel will provide its Open Media Suite platform, ASAM 7301 DSLAMs with ADSL2+ capabilities, IP routers, optical transport and integration services. The new service will support its product roll-out in Vienna before being extended to other cities. Analytical Summary • Current Perspective: Slightly positive on Telekom Austria’s deal with Alcatel to support its triple-play product portfolio (i.e., IPTV, IP telephony and high-speed Internet access). While rollout will initially be limited to Vienna (where it has ADSL2+ services), the migration to the Alcatel Open Media Suite platform with additional components (i.e., DSLAMs, IP routers, optical transport and integration services) will help the incumbent to offer a range of triple-play service offer across a robust platform. • Vendor Importance: High, because Telekom Austria faces strong competition in the national market and must make the necessary investments to upgrade its fixed network to support the emerging triple-play market. This comes at a time when revenues for traditional voice and broadband services are slipping and its market share is stagnant. Timing is also critical for triple-play given the fact that competition from cable operators, primarily UPC, is fierce. The operator also threatens to expand its offering outwards by leveraging the assets of DSL operator Inode, which it acquired earlier in the year. • Market Impact: Low on the Austrian triple-play market as the deal with Alcatel is part of Telekom Austria’s five-year plan to upgrade its national network. Alcatel is offering its Open Media Suite (OMS), 7301 ASAM DSLAMs, IP routers and optical transport equipment. Any short-term impact of this announcement will be felt in Vienna where the incumbent has the IPTV presence and live customers. Recommended Competitor Actions • UPC Telekabel should continue to stress that it has a more established triple-play offering in Austria. As support, the company should stress that it has been offering such services for several years using the cable-based network. It could also stress that it offers more channels (e.g., current estimates around 67), voice and broadband packages that are price competitive with the incumbent. It could also highlight its plans of extending its TV services across the Inode DSL backbone. • All competitors should take aim at the fact that aonDigital TV was only launched within the past six months and is limited to the city of Vienna. They may also want to stress that ADSL2+ is also a service that is only available in Vienna. While Alcatel has a strong product platform and major European reference customers, it will take at least one year (or longer) before the market gains traction. Business Telecom Services - Europe
