Vodafone Application Service Extends Enterprise Applications to the Smartphone| April 27, 2007 | Enterprise Mobility - Europe | Competitive Intelligence Report Analyst: Mayur Sahni
Current Perspective: Positive
On April 27th Vodafone UK announced the Vodafone Applications Service – a new offering that mobilizes enterprise applications onto mobile smart devices. The service includes pre-sales consultancy, delivery and integration as well as support for the entire solution which can comprise any combination of devices, network, middleware and the customer’s enterprise application.
• Current Perspective: Positive on Vodafone UK’s introduction of the Vodafone Application Service since the service encompasses all aspects of mobilizing enterprise applications and is more complete than any competitive offering in the market today. Available as a hosted service, the Vodafone Application Service includes pre-sales consultancy, delivery and integration as well as support for the entire solution; encompassing an extensive combination of devices, network, middleware and customers’ enterprise applications. • Vendor Importance: High to Vodafone UK because it is the first operator to come out with such a complete and compelling service offering for mobilizing enterprise applications. Vodafone UK now has the mantle of an end-to-end managed services provider for mobilizing enterprise applications, which is a significant step forward in its Mobile Plus strategy. Typically, application support has been the offering of fixed-line service providers with minimal, if any, effort put behind mobilizing them. Given the daunting task of doing so, Vodafone has done well to launch its Vodafone Application Service. • Market Impact: High on the mobile application market because Vodafone Application Service is a first-of-its-kind which can tie down various applications, networks and devices into a single hosted delivery platform. Mobile operators across Europe have endeavored to extend enterprise application to handheld devices but with limited levels of success – e-mail being the most successful. Given its first-mover advantage, Vodafone UK has the opportunity for setting industry benchmarks for mobilizing enterprise applications.
Recommended Competitor Actions • Orange Business Services needs to fast track its application support strategy and bring it to market sooner rather than later. Though Orange Business Services has a strong service roadmap, it hasn’t been able to implement the same; this has lead to competitors taking an edge. • BT Global Services should keep a keen eye on Vodafone Application Service and appreciate how it can extend a similar service to its BT Corporate Fusion, FMC offering. BT’s mobility strategy has entailed offering business-focused mobility solutions and incorporating enterprise application support with BT Corporate Fusion will definitely give BT a stronger competitive platform.
• Enterprise customers who have the need for extending their applications to mobile users should give Vodafone more than a favorable ear because the service is a first of its kind and has the right ingredients to suit varying enterprise environment. Being increasingly responsive to end-customer demands is a challenge for businesses today and Vodafone Application Service is a well designed platform to help organizations obtain this goal.
