Event Summary
June 4, 2009 – Telenor unveils its new service Mobilt Bedriftsnett focusing on mobile UC solutions with open APIs. Telenor's service links mobile business users to a company's internal network. This is the first time Telenor has allowed third parties to integrate directly with its mobile network. The operator aims to have more than half of all mobile customers in the Norwegian market using this solution. Mobilt Bedriftsnett is a significant renewal of the current Proffnett product, both technically and in terms of functionality and first step towards full UC based on technology from Alcatel-Lucent and Proweb.
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Positive on Telenor’s new service concept to be deployed in three stages through summer 2010, because it will make it easier and more attractive for enterprise clients to connect to colleagues either via fixed or mobile unified communications solutions. Moreover, Telenor is combining nearly ubiquitous mobile coverage in Norway and an early mover initiative that will appeal to both heavy local mobile users (i.e., sales people and executives) as well as business people that rely less on mobile services, such as office-based managers.
• Vendor Importance: High to Telenor, because the company needed to develop its FMC and mobility service to sustain and win more high-value Norwegian business users. Being ahead of its main rival NetCom/TeliaSonera and somewhat equal to challenger Network Norway, Telenor hops the value proposition for delivering productivity gains to end users with complete UC solutions. Finally the “wherever you are” coverage must be harnessed to the full by Telenor to sell this service concept as an add-on to other business network services such as IP telephony and IP VPNs.
• Market Impact: High on the Norwegian enterprise mobility market, because Telenor is a market leader and appears to be the first to market with such a comprehensive and scalable offering. By opening up the interface in Mobilt Bedriftsnett, Telenor is signifying that it will work differently to create greater innovation closer to its customers and partners. Competitors will come under pressure to reposition their FMC offerings, including UC built upon IMS with open APIs, when Telenor starts selling its Mobilt Bedriftsnett to business people.
Recommended Competitor Actions
• TeliaSonera’s Norwegian mobile subsidiary NetCom needs to deploy its planned FMC and UC services into the Norwegian market. TeliaSonera can’t afford to be left behind Telenor too long and must soon come to market with a strong value proposition for mobile workers to make sure that the company grabs a piece of the growing UC market.
• Network Norway needs to emphasize that its service branded Mobil Bedrift is a similar UC service and mobile product to make sure customers know about this highly mobile solution. The competitor could seek to imitate Telenor with the ability to deliver broader set of open APIs, as this will make the company more competitive overall.
• Both fixed line and mobile operators in Norway such as Banetele, Ventelo and TDC need to communicate any future plans for expansion of their corporate UC mobile services to offer capabilities in a growing and competitive market. In addition, these competitors need to assess the short-term value of responding to Telenor's new value proposition, and should take another look at market potential and development prioritisation as needed.
Recommended End User / Customer Actions
• Telenor’s existing business customers in Norway should contact Telenor and inquire about the cost of connecting to the new UC mobility service concept. They should also ask if an evaluation period is being offered to help customers to test out the service before buying it.
• Large companies in Norway with workers based abroad should push Telenor to provide a roadmap for when the availability for this new service concept can be in place for the company’s entire workforce both nationally and internationally.
• Enterprise customers that have decided to implement new information UC services with high requirements for network mobility should send an RFI to Telenor, as the new Mobilt Bedriftsnett solution is compelling.
