The fall CTIA wireless show, held this year in San Diego from October 11th-14th, has been trying to carve out a unique identity for several years, this time combining enterprise and applications for the second year in a row. This fall’s show (unlike last), the enterprise dominated the conversation, reinforcing the premise that enterprise mobility is finally perceived as a major opportunity by the wireless ecosystem, from carriers to device OEMs to enterprise application developers to platform vendors for management and security. In addition, the consumer and enterprise markets have become more aligned, due to the rise of consumer devices in the enterprise, and the continued excitement surrounding M2M solutions which encompass both business and consumer devices.
However, the Day 1 keynotes, which generally set the theme(s) for the show, were characterized by high level messages from the CEOs of AT&T, Verizon and Sprint showing videos about their M2M solutions, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to spur on innovation, and stressing the overall importance and impact of the wireless industry on everything from political movements to sustainability/green initiatives, to dealing with natural disasters. Their speeches were a bit polite and constrained, given the intense rivalry of the big three carriers, and in marked contrast to the bitterness displayed during last spring’s show which coincided with the announcement of the planned acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T. The real meat of the show came from the deeper dives into the enterprise mobility ecosystem, provided to analysts in one on one briefings, exhibits, demos and panel sessions on hot topics such as M2M.
