The mobile OS has taken a critical role in competition throughout the mobile ecosystem – not just between platform vendors, but the device makers leveraging those platforms as well as the operators selling services based on those devices. Against this backdrop, the week of August 15, 2011 will be regarded as a pivotal moment of ecosystem re-organisation. In the course of five days, Android creator Google announced plans to acquire Motorola Mobility. While pundits and industry debated the potential rationales, HP closed out the week by announcing plans to effectively shutter its webOS offer.
In other words, the week ended with the long-term future of two smartphone operating systems in question, not to mention a number of Current Analysis analyses discussing these events. |

Building on these analyses, what follows is a podcast featuring Emma Mohr-McClune (Research Director, Consumer Services Europe), Peter Jarich (Service Director, Mobile Ecosystem) and Avi Greengart (Research Director, Connected Devices) discussing last week’s events, what they mean to the mobile ecosystem, device makers and operators. More broadly, the discussion aims to answer the question, “What can we expect going forward as the impact of these events on the mobile ecosystem is realized?”
