In Q4 2010, Envivio, Juniper Networks and RGB Networks each announced technical innovations to established video processing practices by introducing solutions that separate video transcoding from packaging. This functional separation enables processing intensive transcoding to be optimally scaled in the video headend (VHE) while less processing intensive video packaging can be optimally scaled at distributed locations at the edge of the network.

Their solutions essentially tackle the same problem: multi-screen video delivery increasingly consumes significant backbone bandwidth due to the requirement to support multiple bit-rates, formats and device profiles. However, each vendor’s solution approach and positioning varies. This offers a unique opportunity to compare the competitiveness of each approach and provide insight into competitive openings that others can exploit.
