IBM Completes Portal Add-On Initiative

Event Summary

On November 30th IBM announced an expansion of its WebSphere Portal software portfolio with the availability of two additional business-ready packages - called accelerators - that can be easily added to a customer's portal to drive online training projects and automate key business processes. These two new accelerators provide training, development and education projects through an IBM Lotus Sametime Web conference -- and also make it easier for customers to automate core business processes with easy entry and integration of data and electronic forms across numerous systems.


Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on IBM’s announcing the immediate availability of two modules for IBM WebSphere Portal 6.01. These two modules, Learning Accelerator and Business Process Accelerator, give IBM customers portal solutions targeting specific use cases with ready-made capabilities designed to cut down on development and deployment time. They complete IBM’s previously announced Accelerator product line and give the company plug-in modules that directly extend the capabilities of WebSphere Portal.

• Vendor Importance: High to IBM, because with these announcements the company has made good on plans announced in April to develop a series of WebSphere Portal Accelerators. These additions confirm and reinforce the company’s commitment to WebSphere Portal as its primary interface for all SOA solutions.

• Market Impact: High on the service-oriented architecture (SOA) and application and data delivery markets, because while most SOA platform vendors and enterprise content management (ECM) vendors provide well-integrated portal solutions, IBM has leveraged its substantial product portfolio (mostly from the Lotus division) to create a highly differentiated platform capable of providing cost-effective and targeted portal-based solutions that will keep WebSphere Portal in the forefront for the near future.
