Event Summary

June 17, 2008 – MetaSwitch announced enhancements to its MetaSphere application suite that are designed to accelerate the adoption of next-generation services to legacy carrier networks. The enhancements enable services from the MetaSphere application server to be deployed to subscribers attached to legacy switching equipment. The application server is capable of being deployed without requiring the carrier to purchase MetaSwitch’s softswitch products.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Slightly positive on MetaSwitch adding enhancements to its MetaSphere application suite that enable carriers to deliver next-generation services to POTS subscribers without replacing their legacy networks. The enhancements allow services offered by the MetaSphere application suite – such as applying rules for call forwarding to specific callers -- to be utilized by users of legacy phone services. The major benefit of the product enhancement is that it enables carriers to satisfy some of its customers’ demands for new services without needing to replace existing switching infrastructure. The importance of the announcement is somewhat muted because MetaSwitch is not the first equipment maker to offer this capability.

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to MetaSwitch, as the functionality added to the MetaSphere application suite will enable the company to expand its targeted customer base by appealing to carriers that are not ready to replace TDM-based switching equipment but recognize the need to provide POTS customers with at least a taste of next-generation services. The product offering is designed to function as an entry way into a customer account, for those not ready to give up legacy systems. MetaSwitch is looking to eventually transform purchasers of its application server into buyers of the company’s core technology.

• Market Impact: Low to moderate on competitors in the IP hosted multimedia space, as MetaSwitch is delivering technologies and capabilities similar to what can be accomplish by competitive products. Competitors, such as GENBAND, BroadSoft and Sylantro, have offered the ability to extend some portions of their feature sets to legacy environments for the past couple of years. Though it is difficult to gauge the uptake of hybrid legacy/next-gen services offering in the past, few competitors have characterized that capability of generating a substantial amount of revenue.
