Event Summary

November 12, 2008 -- Nokia Siemens Networks is looking to put the power of bringing advanced IPTV applications and services in the carriers’ hands with its latest IPTV software release, Home Entertainment Release 3.0. The new offering could allow for full user interface (UI) customization, flexible third-party application integration and management tools, and verification processing. Operators can differentiate their services, overcome the constraints of proprietary vendor development timelines that are typical in today’s IPTV environment, and leverage a more open model that allows for development by the operator’s own staff, third-party developers, or a more open vendor community.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) revealing its new Home Entertainment Release 3.0 with the idea of extending the software development kit (SDK) component to carriers – free of charge – to accelerate and expand application innovation in the area of IPTV-related services by enlisting the carriers themselves and third-party application developers into stimulating application innovation that effectively competes with NSN’s own application development efforts. Now, NSN must show this bold gambit will benefit its overall systems integration and platform sales efforts as well as serve as a spur for IPTV deployments.

• Vendor Importance: High to NSN, as NSN needed to inject a clear differentiator into its IPTV solution set proposition to differentiate further its approach to IPTV-related networking and bolster its systems integration and video networking platform sales prospects. The Home Entertainment 3.0 SDK giveaway runs in dramatic contrast to top-tier IPTV equipment rivals that continue to operate in an assigned cost-per-application model and/or are at least not comping their own SDKs to compete effectively with their own application development efforts.

• Market Impact: High on the overall digital media infrastructure (DMI) market and the IPTV, CDS, and IPTV middleware segments, since NSN possesses the channels and IPTV customer base to oblige rivals to react to NSN’s new tact of essentially de-coupling the user interface layer from the application layer to catalyze on application innovation and effectively apply the Google application development model to IPTV itself.
