Event Summary
June 16, 2008 – Tellabs introduced the Feature Pack 5.0 version of the 7100 OTS metro core DWDM platform. The primary enhancements include line cards with higher port counts and the ability to deploy the platform as either a fixed or reconfigurable OADM. In terms of line card density, Tellabs pointed to a 20% improvement in port counts. In terms of OADM flexibility, the ability to deploy the 7100 OTS without ROADM can lower the cost of the platform at nodes where ROADM is not required.
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Positive on Tellabs’ increasing the 7100 OTS’ port density with higher capacity service cards. One of the primary knocks against Tellabs flagship optical transport platform is that it was relatively less dense than competing metro core WDM platforms. By releasing cards with higher port counts, Tellabs estimates that it has improved platform density by 20%. However, the fact that Tellabs is only now making rather basic upgrades to the platform might help explain why momentum behind the platform was slow to take off.
• Vendor Importance: High to Tellabs, because the 7100 remains the linchpin to the vendor’s ongoing success as an optical vendor. While the company cites impressive growth for its 8000 series aggregation and routing platforms, momentum behind the 7100 has been somewhat slow to build. To this end, it is vital for Tellabs to address weaknesses in the 7100 in the hopes of gaining broader acceptance of the platform.
• Market Impact: Low to moderate on the optical infrastructure market, because while enhancements such as higher density line cards, and the ability to deploy the platform as a fixed OADM seem rather pedestrian on the surface, these seemingly simple factors can have a significant impact on a carrier’s purchase decision. As such, pairing the 7100’s existing strengths as a well-rounded packet-enabled metro WDM solution with important money saving improvements could prove to be a key factor that tips the scales in favor of the 7100 OTS in future carrier buying decisions.
