Event Summary
March 31, 2009 — The IP/MPLS Forum announced the completion of the pilot phase of its “MPLS in Mobile Backhaul” Certification program, with four vendors successfully passing the tests. The program allows vendors and operators to work together to provide a trusted benchmark for use by mobile backhaul providers, operators and their end-users. Vendors participating in the program passed an exhaustive set of tests, administered through the Forum’s certified lab partner, Iometrix.
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Positive on the IP/MPLS Forum’s announcement that three more vendors have joined Cisco in completing the pilot phase of its MPLS in Mobile Backhaul Certification program, because it adds considerable weight to the original announcement of the program early this year. With Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei Technologies and Juniper Networks also achieving initial pilot phase certification, operators and other vendors can rest assured that there is positive momentum and consensus on moving forward with practical industry cooperation on this issue.
• Vendor Importance: High to the IP/MPLS Forum, because as an industry standards group it would not be doing its job if leading vendors in the marketplace did not participate actively in its programs. The announcement is of moderate to high importance to the named vendors as well, due to the commercial urgency involved in agreeing on standard approaches to the current strong market demand for mobile backhaul solutions.
• Market Impact: High on the mobile backhaul market, because the four vendors announced so far by the IP/MPLS Forum as having completed the pilot phase of its certification program are all leading vendors with considerable influence in the marketplace. Other vendors will now find the program to be an urgent priority in order to make sure their platforms comply with the emerging industry benchmarks agreed upon by Forum members and ratified in its certification program.
