Event Summary

April 2, 2009 -- Jasper Wireless announces cellular connectivity for TomTom’s GO 740 Live personal navigation devices. Its service platform includes an auto-provisioning feature that allows users to activate GO 740 LIVE devices immediately with no registration process required. Three months of service are also bundled with each device. Jasper’s expertise, technical support and platform helped accelerate market entry for TomTom and can reduce rollout of consumer M2M deployments to a matter of weeks.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Slightly positive on Jasper’s deal with TomTom to enable wireless connectivity for the vendor’s GO 740 LIVE portable navigation device, as it signals continued expansion of the M2M provider’s market from traditional industrial to “emerging” consumer applications. Jasper is best known for global M2M network aggregation for applications such as Point of Sale, vehicle telematics, asset management/tracking, remote security and meter reading/monitoring. Last year it reinvented itself with a software as a service (SaaS) platform empowering GSM carrier partners to offer global M2M directly, by accelerating time to market and automating provisioning, billing and reporting processes. The platform also helps Jasper in direct sales, as it supports unique business models such as TomTom’s in which users self-activate their device and receive three months of service. Still, Jasper faces a market where carriers are upping their activities in M2M, potentially shrinking the opportunity for aggregators.

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to Jasper as the vendor has already significantly changed its business model, in part as a response to more direct activities by large carriers to generate data traffic and revenue by servicing M2M customers themselves. By focusing on its software and services platform rather than solely on aggregated network connectivity, it can not only enable carriers to succeed in their own M2M deployments, but it can expand to new markets on a direct basis, including consumer electronics embedded with wireless modules or SIMs, which are the new “frontier” for M2M. Jasper also has a consumer focused deal with Coyote for speed trap monitoring launched last November.

• Market Impact: Low to moderate on the enterprise mobility and M2M segments, as most other aggregators and carriers involved in M2M are also excited about the potential for both business and consumer customers to leverage their data networks and are stepping up activity in this space. Jasper’s new business model, including both its platform and enablement services for carriers, and the expansion to new consumer segments, may help future proof Jasper as carriers increasingly become direct competitors.
