Event Summary

March 30, 2009 -- Motorola, Inc. announced the launch of software release 5.2 for the widely deployed DOCSIS 3.0 CableLabs Bronze-qualified Motorola BSR 64000 integrated CMTS (I-CMTS), a new line of SURFboard wireless home gateway platforms, and the Netopia Broad Band Server (NBBS) DOCSIS Remote Device Management Module, a remote subscriber device and service management solution that offers comprehensive lifecycle management of wired and wireless CPE and other devices, for cable and WiMAX.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Motorola’s triple play of new cable infrastructure solutions and product enhancements, which includes software release 5.2 for the company’s flagship BSR 64000 cable modem termination system (CMTS) platform, a set of new WiFi-enabled cable home gateway platforms, and a cable market-specific version of the Netopia-developed device management solution, NBBS (Netopia Broad Band Server). These new solutions will both individually and collectively enable cable operators to expand and improve their service offerings for customers, and the NBBS provides operational efficiency gains.

• Vendor Importance: High to Motorola, which needed to leverage the Cable Show’s high profile as the launching point for its three cable product announcements, in order to gain maximum customer and market exposure for the new solutions/enhancements. While Motorola remains the market leader in the overall cable modem market, the new home gateway products, along with the NBBS management solution, improve its overall cable CPE proposition. On the cable headend front, Motorola’s new 5.2 software release for the BSR CMTS may be a critical enabler for the company as it strives to regain lost market share in this segment.

• Market Impact:
Moderate to high on the overall cable infrastructure market, because Motorola still commands a strong position in this market (i.e., garnering 35.3% of global revenues during Q1-Q3 2008, second only to Cisco’s 40.5%), and with these new solutions and enhancements, Motorola has increased the degree of difficulty for competitors in the cable space. The cable headend market is the only sector where Motorola does not figure as strongly in the mix (i.e., accounting for only 7.4% of revenues during Q1-Q3 2008, with Cisco and ARRIS garnering 69.8% and 22.3%, respectively), but given Motorola’s installed headend base, the 5.2 CMTS enhancements will still get the attention of rivals.
