Event Summary

February 9, 2009 –- ip.access announced the launch of a WCDMA/HSPA access point aimed at the enterprise, the nano3G picocell. Leveraging ip.access femtocell R&D, architecture and integration capabilities, the nano3G differentiates itself from the Oyster 3G femtocell thanks to added coverage (up to 200 meters) and user capacity (up to 8 simultaneous users).

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Very positive on ip.access’ new nano3G picocell. Broad operator interest in 3G femtocells is matched by their interest in 3G enterprise coverage – potentially even greater than the interest in femtocells, given greater financial resources in the enterprise, a greater demand for high-speed data and generally poorer RF conditions (thanks to steel and concrete-based construction). The nano3G gives ip.access a product to tap that interest, leverage its picocell credibility and potentially even support its sales channels. Unlike the 2G market, however, ip.access cannot claim to be the first vendor with a 3G picocell and it’s not even clear when the nano3G will be commercially available (even if its capabilities and form factor serve to set it apart in the market).

• Vendor Importance: Very high to ip.access because the company’s core assets include a substantial 2G picocell sales history and a 3G femtocell offer. To leverage these assets – and tap the demand for in-building, enterprise 3G – a product like the nano3G is a necessity. Just as important is the fact that ip.access’ femtocell competitors are positioning their offers into the enterprise and building plans for their own 3G picocells, making time of the essence for ip.access and its 3G picocell.

• Market Impact: Moderate to high on the wireless infrastructure market because, right or wrong, incumbent 3G vendors will dismiss the concept of 3G picocells as, “old news,” pointing to their own 3G pico portfolios. That said, few will be able to match the compact nature of the nano3G or the deployment functionality borrowed from ip.access’ femtocell R&D – telegraphing the R&D competitors may need to follow if they hope to deliver attractive 3G picocells in the near-term – or 4G picocells going forward.
