Motorola Wins GPON Deployment with Cincinnati Bell

| Sep 29, 2009 | Broadband Infrastructure | Show Update

Current Perspective: Positive
Vendor Importance: High
Market Impact: High

Event Summary

September 29, 2009 – Motorola announced that Cincinnati Bell has selected Motorola’s GPON, edge modulation, encryptor and encoding solutions for deployment in its fiber network. Cincinnati Bell’s fiber network will run on Motorola’s AXS2200 OLT, the 1 GHz-capable Motorola ONT1400 single-family ONT, and Motorola ONT6000 designed to serve multiple-dwelling units. These Motorola solutions inherently support SCTE-55-1, or Motorola RF return path functionality, for easy integration with Motorola RF set-tops and headend equipment.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Motorola’s multi-faceted (GPON+Video) deployment with Cincinnati Bell, as this win highlights Motorola’s unique ability to provide both a comprehensive FTTH solution as well as the critical enabling components for advanced digital video service delivery, a proposition which very few rivals can match in-house. From the FTTH perspective, this is also an important win for Motorola as it represents the company’s second-largest account in North America behind Verizon.

• Vendor Importance: High to Motorola, which needed the Cincinnati Bell deployment to broaden and deepen its FTTH/GPON customer base in North America. While Motorola’s success within the Verizon FiOS network is now common knowledge (i.e., Motorola has pulled even with Alcatel-Lucent during 2009, effectively becoming a co-supplier to Verizon), after Verizon, Motorola’s North American customer base consisted primarily of smaller, Tier 2 or 3 operators. But with Cincinnati Bell’s plans for a mass-market FTTH network build-out, Motorola is looking at a very strong upside for its GPON business.

• Market Impact: High on the North American FTTH market, for two reasons. First, this win highlights Motorola’s growing momentum in both the North American (and global) FTTH/GPON markets, which has come thanks to its impressive performance and growing presence within the Verizon FiOS account. Second, Cincinnati Bell is a sizable operator in terms of both wireline and wireless subscribers, and as such, Motorola has garnered an impressive new customer logo for its GPON (and video) proposition.
