Event Summary

April 21, 2009 – Symantec announced it has expanded its security portfolio by offering new Protection Suites for small business and enterprise customers and adding Web security technology through the acquisition of Mi5 Networks. Symantec Protection Suite Small Business Edition and Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition are comprehensive solutions designed to secure firms against security risks and business interruptions, ensuring systems and critical information are readily available. The Symantec Protection Suites are scheduled to be available in summer 2009. The company also announced its acquisition of Mi5 Networks.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Slightly positive on Symantec’s new Protection Suite Small Business Edition and Protection Suite Enterprise Edition and Mi5 Networks acquisition as the company gains some much-needed security momentum with the infusion of Mi5‘s site protection capabilities.

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to Symantec as the company has needed to make up for some ground lost to carriers and other managed security service providers (MSSPs that have continued to up the ante with more sophisticated solution sets). In particular, the Mi5 web security acquisition helps Symantec address incoming/outgoing traffic issues by providing protection against spyware and other malware.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the managed security market, because while competitors have had time to adjust their offerings to Symantec’s new Protection Suite; its Mi5 Networks acquisition could have a greater effect. The move enhances Symantec’s ability to protect clients against Spyware, a weakness for many rival MSSPs.
