Event Summary
March 30, 2009 –- Acme packet announced the introduction of the Net-Net 3800, a low end session border controller (SBC) designed for small enterprise sites, contact centers and service providers needing up to 500 simultaneous VoIP/Unified Communications sessions. The new platform is designed to reduce the entry level pricing by as much as 50% while still providing all the same SBC functions and features found in Acme mid and high end SBC’s.
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Slightly positive on Acme Packet’s introduction of the Net-Net 3800 SBC because it makes available a session border controller that can provided the signaling, interworking and secure the SIP/H.323 trunking and internet border to remote offices, telecommuters and mobile employees in a small 1u high platform form factor that is right-sized for enterprise environments.
• Vendor Importance: Moderate to Acme Packet because its launch of the Net-Net 3800 does not mark the company’s first attempts to penetrate the enterprise space more deeply, however the new product comes at a price point and with scalability that makes it suitable for a wider range of business accounts than existing platforms in its Net-Net portfolio. Since Acme is a small public company offering a single product line that positions itself as a best of breed supplier it needs to offer product platforms for a broad range of use cases rather than relying solely on larger carrier applications.
• Market Impact: Moderate on the enterprise communications market because although session border controllers have had limited success in becoming commonly deployed in the space, limitations to adoption have been in part due to high price points commanded by platforms offering capacities suitable only to the largest of enterprises. However, low-end platforms that provide all the functionality of larger high-end platforms at much reduced price points solve these particular issues, leaving only competition from more traditional enterprise security and gateway solutions as the main hurdles to overcome for more widespread adoption.
