Event Summary

April 1, 2009 – At VoiceCon, Nortel demonstrated its freshly unveiled new and upgraded products, including Communication Server 1000 6.0, Media Gateway 1010, Unified Management, MC 3100 Mobility, CallPilot 202i, Multimedia Conferencing 6.0, the new IP Phone 1165E and integrated vertical solutions. The new offerings are being rolled out globally beginning in Q2 2009.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Nortel’s enhancements, because the company has expanded the deployment options available for its Communication Server 1000 IP PBX, its associated applications and end points. Moving its portfolio forward will be appreciated by existing Nortel customers and channel partners, however these actions may not be enough to reassure prospective customers of the company’s long-term viability.

• Vendor Importance: High to Nortel, because the product enhancements allow the company to shine a positive light on its R&D achievements despite recent negative news about the company’s filing for bankruptcy protection. Nortel needed to demonstrate that it still has the ability to progress its technology, and the new options provide tools that will help the company retain some of its existing large enterprise accounts that may have been wavering.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the enterprise communications market, because Nortel has demonstrated that it still has the resources and commitment to make a stand in an effort to maintain its competitive position. However, rivals will continue in relentless pursuit of Nortel’s customers and channel partners until the company fortifies its position by finding a permanent solution to its financial crisis.
