AT&T Announces Enterprise Mobility Initiatives, Reinforcing Its Focus

| Jul 22, 2010 | Mobility Services
| Analyst: Kitty Weldon

Event Summary

July 20, 2010 - AT&T launches three new mobility initiatives, including a M2M partnership with solar energy solutions provider Petra Solar, a Global Smart Messaging Suite for businesses, and an encrypted voice service using two-factor authentication. The carrier also noted its continuing traction in enterprise mobility, citing several customer examples as well as two other recent partner agreements in the areas of wireless payments and smart grid technology.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on AT&T’s barrage of enterprise mobility announcements, customer examples and application partnerships, as they combine to reinforce the carrier’s messaging about its strong focus on enterprise mobility. While announcing various services, applications and partnerships together makes the story a bit disjointed, this doesn’t mean they aren’t in themselves solid initiatives.

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to AT&T, because the carrier clearly felt that the combined set of new announcements, recent announcements, and customer examples told a larger story than if they were announced separately. The new messaging and voice encryption services show AT&T’s responsiveness to key vertical industries such as government organizations, as well as its understanding of the requirement for enterprise-grade messaging solutions in the global market. AT&T’s M2M partnerships continue to grow, evidence of its commitment to this segment.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the enterprise mobility market, because while none of the new announcements is earth-shaking by itself (and all other carriers continue to make M2M partnerships), together they reinforce AT&T’s messaging. The mobile encrypted voice service should attract government users, while the messaging suite has its own unique features and benefits, and should resonate with MNCs. Overall, AT&T remains very threatening to other carriers when it comes to enterprise mobility.
