February 2, 2010 – Barracuda Networks has launched the Barracuda NG Firewall. The Barracuda NG Firewall is a line of virtual and hardware appliances designed to protect enterprise network infrastructure, improve site-to-site connectivity and simplify administration of network operations. This product launch is the first since Barracuda Networks' successful acquisition of phion AG, a leading firewall provider based in Austria, in September 2009.

But the company is late to this dance and has considerable work ahead of it with regard to market awareness and reputation as an enterprise vendor.

• Vendor Importance: High to Barracuda, because this is another important step in the company’s broader strategy to extend its offerings in the enterprise market. Its ability to compete effectively with the NG Firewall family will have a significant and direct impact on its success in the enterprise markets in general. The immediate question mark is whether Barracuda can execute on its strategy from the sales side.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the network security market, because it is another strong indication that the firewall/VPN markets are indeed evolving and maturing. Vendors need to deliver a broad set of application aware functionality on top of traditional firewall and remote access capabilities. This includes both additional security and network management functionality. The visibility enabled into network traffic through application awareness on the security side provides a low cost incentive to include WAN optimization capabilities as part of the bundle.
