COMPUTEX 2010

MIPS Finds a Myriad of Support for Android on MIPS

| Jun 3, 2010 | Mobile Device Silicon
| Analyst: Ron Westfall

Event Summary

June 1, 2010 - MIPS Technologies, a provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, and Myriad Group AG, a vendor in mobile technology with software in over 2 billion phones, announced availability of a high-performance full method-based Dalvik Turbo virtual machine (VM) optimized for the MIPS architecture. Myriad's Dalvik Turbo VM replaces the standard Android Dalvik engine, accelerating performance up to five times on real-world Android applications running on MIPS-based devices.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Moderate on the partnership between MIPS and mobile applications vendor Myriad, primarily since the initiation of that partnership did not include customer endorsements. However, the partnership holds significant long-term potential within the mobile device arena, including smartphones, given MIPS’ extensive consumer electronics (CE) customer base and Myriad’s vast mobile application presence.

Vendor Importance: Moderate to MIPS, since the company needs to continue enlisting high-profile partners, such as Myriad, to create the channel density necessary to win more mobile device business. This complements the additional partnership initiatives with SySDSoft and SiS that MIPS unveiled during the Computex 2010 event.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the overall mobile device silicon market segment since MIPS has yet to establish a threatening foothold within the mobile device silicon market, although the company has landed some Asia-based business in this area. However, ARM and Intel need to continue monitoring MIPS’ mobile device silicon moves as they present a silicon architecture alternative to their architectures within the mobile device OEM realm.
