Intel Unleashes New Atom Moorestown Z6xx Series, Aims to Split the Smartphone Competition

| May 6, 2010 | Mobile Device Silicon
| Analyst: Ron Westfall

Event Summary

May 4, 2010 -- Benefitting from the company's power-saving architecture, its transistor and circuit design expertise, and its unique manufacturing process techniques, Intel Corporation unveiled its newest Intel Atom processor-based platform (formerly "Moorestown"). The technology package provides significantly lower power consumption and prepares the company to target a range of computing devices, including high-end smartphones, tablets, and other mobile handheld products.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Intel launching the new Intel Atom platform consisting of the Atom processor Z6xx series, MSIC, and Intel Platform Controller Hub MP20 components. The new Atom platform enables Intel to assert well-detailed technological advances and clear competitive differentiators in mobile device silicon against rivals in areas such as performance improvements, power efficiency breakthroughs, integration flexibility, and smartphone/tablet compatibility.

• Vendor Importance: Very high to Intel, since the company needed to unveil the Atom Processor Z6xx series, MSIC, and Intel Platform Controller Hub MP20 products to improve its overall Atom microarchitecture product family proposition dramatically. The new Z-series offering, designed for the smartphone/tablet market segment, complements the N-series, designed for netbooks; the CE-series, designed for the high-end TV market segment; the D-series, designed for entry desktops; and the Embedded Series, designed for various I/O applications. The new Z-series offering also demonstrates that Intel successfully executed on its Atom processor roadmap in this area.

• Market Impact: Very high on the mobile device silicon market segment, because Intel simply possesses the corporate resources in areas such as channels, product portfolio diversity and depth, and overall market presence to oblige all mobile device silicon rivals to adopt new product development and marketing initiatives in response to Intel’s new Moorestown Z6xx series/MP20 product offerings. Intel already possesses a dominant market presence within the netbook processor market, via the Atom N-series, which can help drive Atom Z-series sales and marketing efforts within the smartphone/tablet processor segment.
