| Aug 10, 2010 | Mobile Device Silicon
| Analysts: Ron Westfall, Jeff Ogle
Event Summary
August 10, 2010 –Texas Instruments confirmed that it was the first company to partner with ARM in the conceptions and definition of its next generation ARM Cortex-A series processor core (also known as Eagle) to be announced later this year. TI intends to use the new processor in its future OMAP platform offerings. TI engaged with ARM on this project in June 2009. TI is leveraging its low power system-on-a-chip (SoC) platform expertise in the hopes of raising the bar in high-performance, low power mobile platform solutions.
Quick Take

Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Positive on TI’s announcement as the first company to partner with ARM for the concept and definition of its next-generation ARM Cortex-A series processor core because this can provide TI with a significant time-to-market advantage. In terms of capturing early mind share among mobile equipment OEMs, TI can assert a marketing and product development edge over ARM-based mobile silicon rivals.
• Vendor Importance: High to TI, because it needed to demonstrate that it can sustain OMAP platform innovations, since the mobile application processor/platform market segment is extremely competitive with virtually all the main players licensing ARM technology to produce SoC solutions optimized for high-performance combined with low power consumption requirements. TI is now positioned to capture initial OEM design wins and participate in the first phase of product deployment efforts.
• Market Impact: High on the mobile device silicon market, because TI’s mobile silicon rivals will need to respond to the TI-ARM alliance in regards to ARM’s next generation Cortex-A processor ramp up. This announcement enables TI to drive the early stages of marketing related to the ARM next-generation Cortex-A offering in the area of mobile silicon.
