Event Summary

March 24, 2010 -- Samsung introduced the Galaxy S (Model: GT-I9000), which will be the slimmest Android phone on the market and the first phone to embody the vendor’s new Smart Life concept. The Galaxy S is 9.9mm thin, and it has a four-inch Super AMOLED display and a 1 GHz Samsung processor. Specifics regarding carrier, price, and availability were not announced beyond noting a release in “summer 2010,” though the handset does run on GSM, so it is likely earmarked for AT&T or T-Mobile.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Samsung’s announcement of the Galaxy S, because Samsung has upped the ante in 3G Android offerings with a well-designed, slim, and sexy handset with a phenomenal four-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, dual cameras, HD video recording capability, and wireless output. Assuming Samsung can deliver on its promises, it should significantly enhance the integrated user experience, something that cannot be said for Samsung’s previous TouchWiz software efforts.

• Vendor Importance: High to Samsung, because the vendor needed a differentiated offering in the Android space, as Motorola and HTC have been monopolizing that corner of the smartphone market. Samsung can compete with anyone on hardware components, but it has struggled when it has tried to create differentiated software-based user experiences; Samsung’s S Life concept (and accompanying software) is expected to take the Galaxy S’s integrated user experience to future models.

• Market Impact: High on the smartphones market, if Samsung can actually deliver on its software promises. Samsung has always been able to compete based on hardware components, and the Galaxy S will certainly make its mark in smartphone offerings with its stunning display, slim form, and fast processor. However, the integrated user experience is new for the vendor. Regardless, the Galaxy S does not overshadow the real news of CTIA: HTC’s EVO 4G, which takes “specsmanship” to a new level and is crucial to Sprint’s strategy. The Galaxy S does not even have a specific carrier commitment.
