iPass Adds to its Open Mobile Platform, Enhancing Core Value Propositiont

| Jun 24, 2010 | Mobility Services
| Analyst: Kitty Weldon

Event Summary

June 22, 2010 -- iPass added enhancements to its Open Mobile platform, including instant access to free (but vetted) WiFi hotspots and new reports that detail 3G usage by user, location, or network used and separately show roaming sessions. Enterprises can set thresholds, alerts, and policy blocks when thresholds are reached or for 3G roaming. Also added are options to customize the brand, look, and feel of the Open Mobile portal and the Open Mobile client and deliver RSS feeds to employees’ desktops.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on iPass’ platform enhancements, as its Open Mobile platform and enterprise mobility portfolio are the lynchpins of its long-term strategy. The more iPass can differentiate itself from its competitors, go beyond access for revenue generation, and get deeper penetration of its customer base, the better.

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to iPass, as the new enhancements do not in themselves constitute a new service or strategy as much as a part of the continuing service, platform, and strategy evolution that the company has had in place since last year. iPass must succeed in generating revenues with its evolved services set, so progress is important.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the global enterprise mobility segment, because while iPass does still compete against its traditional RAS competitors, it is trying to become so differentiated that it will eventually have fewer direct competitors.
