AT&T Finally Goes Live with LTE: Will It Help Generate Subscriber Momentum?

| Sep 19, 2011 | Consumer Services U.S.
| Analyst: Wes Henderek

Event Summary

September 19, 2011 -- AT&T has announced that its 4G LTE network has gone live in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Chicago. AT&T is claiming that 4G LTE offers speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G networks. The carrier currently offers four LTE-compatible devices, including the HTC Jetstream tablet, the Momentum 4G USB stick, the Adrenaline USB stick, and the Elevate 4G mobile hotspot device. AT&T will offer coverage in at least 15 markets to 70 million people by the end of 2011.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on AT&T’s official launch of its long-anticipated LTE network, as the carrier desperately needed to hit its mid-year launch target in order to avoid falling even further behind Verizon Wireless and to demonstrate that it is on schedule with its deployment. However, with a limited launch in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Chicago and the promise of at least 15 markets covering 70 million POPs by the end of 2011, it will still likely be years before AT&T can come close to matching Verizon’s LTE coverage. In addition, AT&T has not launched any LTE smartphones and has only indicated that at least one LTE smartphone will be available by the end of the year (compared to four LTE smartphones and eight LTE Internet devices today for Verizon). Despite limited coverage, a lack of LTE smartphones, and the ongoing headache of the T-Mobile DoJ lawsuit, AT&T has still positioned itself on the right technology platform for long-term growth and momentum.

4G LTE FROM AT&T AVAILABLE IN ATLANTA

ATLANTA, GA. (SEPT. 19, 2011) — AT&T* today announced that customers in Atlanta have access to the latest generation of wireless network technology from AT&T, 4G LTE, which is capable of delivering mobile broadband speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. 4G LTE is also more efficient than other mobile broadband technologies, providing responsive performance for customers when they need it most.

“We continue to see demand for mobile broadband skyrocket, and now our customers in Atlanta have access to the latest in mobile broadband with 4G LTE,” said Keith Holmes, vice president and general manager of AT&T Georgia. “Customers can now get everything from e-mail to apps to streaming video even faster.”

AT&T currently offers four 4G LTE-compatible devices: the HTC Jetstream tablet, the AT&T USBConnect Momentum 4G, the AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G, and the AT&T USBConnect Adrenaline.

AT&T will continue to expand its 4G LTE footprint in Atlanta over the coming months. AT&T has also launched 4G LTE in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Chicago, and plans to offer 4G LTE in at least 15 markets and to 70 million Americans by the end of the year.

AT&T is positioned to deliver a great mobile broadband experience to its customers, now and in the future. Not only is AT&T deploying 4G LTE, it has also deployed fast HSPA+ technology throughout its mobile broadband network. HSPA+, when combined with enhanced backhaul, provides customers with 4G speeds. The two complementary technologies mean that customers will have more consistent mobile broadband speeds as they move in and out of 4G LTE areas. Customers of competitors who have transitioned to 4G LTE without further speed upgrades to their existing networks are likely to see a steep drop-off in speeds when they move out of 4G LTE areas.
