AT&T Fortifies MEAP with Managed and Professional Services

Aug 24, 2011 | Mobility Services
| Analyst: Kathryn Weldon

Event Summary

August 22, 2011 - AT&T launches Managed MEAP, now hosting a variety of mobile business applications in its network-based cloud, with the ability to manage and support these applications with computing and storage capabilities. The carrier is also adding professional services, network and business SLAs, and a Pyxis Mobile license as the first of a growing set of solution partner options to be included in the package. AT&T provides a single contract and invoice for its solution components.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on AT&T’s packaging of Managed MEAP, because it provides a more compelling set of end-to-end solutions with which to meet customer requirements for cross-platform mobile business applications. While AT&T has had MEAP available for several years, the new capabilities up the carrier’s game, adding managed and professional services components that large enterprise customers need. Previously, enterprises would either have needed to have AT&T assemble the components for their service, or incorporate components from third-party integrators/software vendors/hosting providers.

• Vendor Importance: High to AT&T, because Managed MEAP can capture a much bigger part of the customers' total mobile enterprise budget, and because customers will now be more likely to consider AT&T as their end-to-end mobile solutions provider. AT&T Managed MEAP also ties in with related cloud computing initiatives and takes advantage of the same Synaptic Hosting infrastructure that the carrier has in place for other (non-mobile) managed application services.

• Market Impact: Moderate on enterprise mobility, as competitive carriers (and ITSPs) have been aggressively moving into this space with their own sets of platform and application software provider partners. Several competitors have been historically stronger in professional services, and have been talking the talk of marrying cloud services with mobility for a longer time. AT&T will be in a stronger position now to meet these competitive challenges, but will still face a growing set of service providers with similar propositions. While principally targeting U.S.-based enterprises, AT&T may also face global competitors as it goes after MNCs.

Unleash Your Workforce: New AT&T Offer Helps Businesses Extend Critical Business Apps To Devices

DALLAS, August 22, 2011 — Call it a mass movement to un-tether the workforce: businesses everywhere are empowering mobile workers with business apps on mobile devices. The retail customer assistant using a tablet PC to help you find the shoes you want. The insurance agent using her smartphone to shoot, send and archive a photo of the engagement ring you want insured.

But customizing business apps to work on tablets and smartphones can be time consuming and costly for businesses, requiring hundreds of man hours from the app development team.

Now, with help from AT&T, businesses can extend their business apps to run on almost any device. AT&T Mobile Enterprise Applications Platform (MEAP) – Managed Solution allows businesses to extend and run apps across a range of devices including PCs, smart phones and tablets. AT&T’s experts work with customers’ application development teams to put it all together and ensure the apps are reliable and highly secure.

Industry analyst firm IDC forecasts the industry-wide MEAP revenue in the Americas to increase to $929.6 million by 2014 .

"The United States has the highest percentage of mobile workers in its workforce and will remain the most highly concentrated market for mobile workers in the world with three-quarters of the workforce being mobile by 2013," said Stephen Drake, program VP, IDC's Mobility and Telecom. “MEAP provides the mission critical platform required to mobile-enable this key workforce population.”

“AT&T MEAP – Managed Solution can help businesses accelerate mobile application development and lay the foundation for empowering a mobile workforce with business apps,” said Chris Hill, Vice President, Advanced Mobility Solutions, AT&T Business Solutions.

With the AT&T Managed MEAP Solution, AT&T provides a robust offering including software from Pyxis Mobile, application development and management on AT&T’s Synaptic Hosting infrastructure, integration, professional services and more.

For businesses that choose AT&T MEAP – Managed Solution, AT&T:
• Connects companies’ mobile applications with their existing office systems, allowing access to business data on-the-go.
• Provides experienced technical architects, developers and quality assurance teams to identify and build mobile application solutions.
• Hosts the mobile applications in its network-based cloud with the ability to manage and support the applications with computing and storage capabilities
• Supports the solution to reduce investment risk and create a seamless experience.

“The demand for a comprehensive MEAP solution has exploded over the past few years as an increasing number of businesses have identified the need for a mobile application development solution that allows them to take complete control of their mobile initiatives,” said Steve Levy, CEO, Pyxis Mobile. “AT&T and Pyxis Mobile are helping companies around the globe gain a competitive advantage by enabling them to build cross-device native applications in the fastest, easiest, and most cost-effective way possible.”
