Cisco Releases Wave of New Data Center Products, Extending Data Center Business Advantage and Nexus Family

| Apr 1, 2011 | Enterprise Networking, Data Center Technology
| Analyst: Mike Spanbauer

Event Summary

March 30, 2011 - Cisco announced a wave of products ranging from switching technologies to storage to management. This launch sees many improvements to the Nexus family offering, in addition to some new capabilities and modules for the MDS 9500 and Catalyst 6500 too. It is clear that Cisco is addressing perceived challenges in technology today across the data center.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Cisco’s Data Center Business Advantage solution as it addresses some limitations that the offering possessed before, while maintaining continuity across the family. These enhancements should address several concerns and help customers to evaluate technology offerings from Cisco and others more clearly.

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to Cisco, because it enjoys a position of strength in Enterprise networking and these new additions help to deflect some of the aggressive competition, but won’t necessarily increase their net new customer base in a material way.

• Market Impact: High on the market as Cisco is the first vendor to address one of, if not the most significant inhibitor to FCoE adoption, which was the single “hop” limitation with the embrace of “multi-hop” support.
