FTTH Council Europe 2011

Ericsson Aims for PON Glory with Various Enhancements

| Feb 11, 2011 | Fixed Access Infrastructure
| Analyst: Erik Keith

Event Summary

February 9, 2011 -- Ericsson announced several enhancements to its EDA 1500 GPON solution set, including: a 16-port GPON OLT line card supporting more than 14,000 subscribers in a single chassis; an Integrated TDM Gateway (ITG) board, enabling a converged platform for packet and TDM services; and the T780G Optical Network Unit (ONU), a GPON-fed modular ONU that delivers ADSL2+, VDSL2, POTS, E1, and Ethernet services to both business and residential users. LG-Ericsson also announced the debut of 40 Gbps WDM-PON for its EA 1100 platform.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Ericsson’s announced enhancements to its EDA 1500 GPON solution set and LG-Ericsson’s debut of 40 Gbps WDM-PON capability, because although the 16-port OLT subscriber card is a year away from general availability, Ericsson is nevertheless deserving of some accolades for being on the “bleeding edge” of FTTH/GPON product development; the same goes for LG-Ericsson, as evidenced by the new 40 Gbps WDM-PON technology.

• Vendor Importance: High to Ericsson, because while the company is starting to generate increasing momentum in the global GPON market, as evidenced by its recently announced mass-market build-out with China Unicom, Ericsson nevertheless needs additional market traction to ensure its viability in the evolving fiber access market. With these new enhancements to the EDA 1500 and (LG-Ericsson’s) EA 1100 WDM-PON solution sets, the company is executing well on a solid marketing strategy that should pave the way for ongoing momentum in the global fiber access space.

• Market Impact: High on the overall next-generation fiber access market, because despite the one-year lead time on the 16-port OLT card (with GA for the other enhancements still to be confirmed), these announcements by Ericsson and LG-Ericsson will certainly impact rival vendor product development cycles across multiple fronts, ranging from subscriber port density counts to the ONU sector, where Ericsson’s new T780G promises to excite operators and rival vendors alike, albeit for very different reasons.
