Integra Telecom Makes Multi-Pronged Ethernet Expansion for its Enterprise Play

| Aug 3, 2011 | Network Access and VPN Services
| Analyst: Brian Washburn

Event Summary

August 1, 2011 – Integra Telecom is expanding Ethernet over copper (EoC) availability to more than 120 COs, and is making Ethernet over TDM (T1/NxT1) available to almost 300 COs in its 11-state footprint. The company already offers Ethernet over fiber. Integra's Ethernet services support high-speed access (including Internet access and access to data centers), point-to-point and multipoint networking connectivity.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Moderate to Integra Telecom’s announcement of its Ethernet-centric strategy, because the provider is following up on its initial Ethernet over copper (EoC) deployment in mid-2008, using Hatteras Networks’ gear. Integra appears to be making sweeping changes in response to revenues that flagged in 2008-2009. By emphasizing Ethernet access, Integra Telecom can out-compete traditional T1/NxT1 leased-line services in speed, price and functionality at the low end, and go up against products such as CenturyLink's Metro Optical Ethernet (QMOE) at the high end.

• Vendor Importance:
High to Integra Telecom, because the carrier is expanding its fiber/copper Ethernet access as part of an overall business development plan to expand its service up-market, targeting local and regional small and mid-size enterprise customers. Integra Telecom is ramping up a strategy that bundles networking and cloud services to appeal to these mostly multi-site enterprises in its 11-state service area.

• Market Impact: Moderate to CenturyLink, because Integra's Ethernet expansion plans will compete directly against CenturyLink's copper-/fiber-based Ethernet services across much of that company's 14-state RBOC footprint. Integra Telecom's 1,700 lit buildings and EoC in 120 COs may seem small, but the carrier can reach the downtown areas of the most attractive markets in its mountain and western region footprint. What's more, Integra can offer Ethernet over TDM as an alternative in nearly 300 additional COs where it has a presence.
