Jive Ups the Social Enterprise Ante with New Jive 5 Software and a New Marketplace

| May 26, 2011 | Collaboration Platforms
| Analyst: Brad Shimmin

Event Summary

May 24, 2011 -- Jive Software unveiled Jive 5 with the aim of helping organizations harness the power of their most powerful asset, the social network. Jive 5 captures knowledge generated by employees, customers, and partners in a collaborative social platform capable of transforming the way people work. With this new release, Jive has introduced new social analytics features with the inclusion of Jive What Matters. It has also introduced the Jive Apps Market, where customers and partners can build, deploy, and consume bespoke software. In addition, the company expanded its efforts to bring a complete social experience to the Microsoft desktop.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Very positive on Jive's announcement of Jive 5, the next major iteration of its social business platform (Jive Engage), because this release further solidifies the vendor's position as the leading independent player within the enterprise social networking space. The introduction of built-in social analytics tools in support of filtering and recommendations, a reworking of the product's entire UI, the acquisition and maturation of Microsoft Office integration technologies, as well as the formal launch of an integrated partner application marketplace (Jive Apps Market) will greatly enhance Jive's ability to position its product as a unifying social layer that not only drives business value, but also represents the business itself.

• Vendor Importance: Very high to Jive, as the vendor set for itself some very lofty goals in September 2010, when it introduced the Jive Apps Market with the promise of both encouraging the development of software running on top of the Jive platform and facilitating the provisioning and sales of that software in support of its global 3,000-plus customer base. With the launch of Jive version 5, the company has not only met these goals; it has also set itself up as a key IT services partner for its customers, becoming a central provisioning and dissemination service provider for any software built to leverage the Jive platform.

• Market Impact: High on the collaboration platform market, because this release, which will ship free of charge to all licensed Jive customers by the end of June, goes after two imminent market opportunities. First, it tackles the social analytics market with technology capable of handling very large, complex data problems, well beyond basic expertise location. Second, it makes a concerted appeal to large-scale Microsoft SharePoint, Exchange, and Outlook deployments, encouraging those customers to purchase Jive 5 as a means of socially enabling Microsoft technologies before Microsoft itself can do so and without forcing a migration away from those technologies. These areas of focus will force both Microsoft and other collaboration platform players such as IBM, NewsGator, and Google to accelerate their own parallel efforts in order to keep pace.

Jive Launches Industry's Most Innovative Social Business Platform

San Francisco, Calif. – May 24, 2011 – Today at The New Way Tour, Jive Software unveiled Jive 5, the most advanced and powerful Social Business platform in the industry. With this launch, Jive sets a new standard of Social Business excellence, further extending its market leadership.

Jive 5 helps organizations harness the power of their most powerful asset, the social network. Businesses are driven by ideas, conversations, expertise, knowledge and connections created in the networks of their employees, customers and partners. Jive 5 captures this knowledge into a collaborative, social platform that transforms the way people work. With this new release, Jive is driving the new way to business by:
Delivering the right information to the right person at the right time with Jive What Matters;
Introducing a revolutionary new way to bring innovation to the enterprise with the Jive Apps Market; and
Bringing a complete social experience to the Microsoft desktop.

"Jive 5 is the result of real experience achieved from the largest, longest-running Social Business implementations in the industry," said Patrick Lin, Jive Senior Vice President of Product Management. "We built the leading social platform, pursing an aggressive vision that defines a completely new way of doing business. The new way is ultimately about connections, and it starts with one idea - that the social network is the business. Companies who embrace it will cement their leadership and competitive advantage, while setting the standard for the social enterprise.”

Jive What Matters: Delivers the Right Information to the Right Person at the Right Time

Jive What Matters functions as a centralized social hub to all the information generated by a company's social network -- employees, systems, partners, customers and the broader social web. It provides all the information companies need to get work done, bringing it to the right person at the right time.

Jive What Matters includes a powerful recommendation engine that has been further enhanced with 'big data' and scientific expertise in semantic analysis and machine learning technology brought by Jive's recent acquisition of Proximal Labs. It provides predictive intelligence, helping businesses prepare for the future, find hidden talent and expertise, and even discover ideas that can fuel growth.

Jive Apps Market: Brings Innovation Back to the Enterprise

Following the revolution in the social consumer space, employees have started to bring into the enterprise a new generation of easy to use, yet powerful cloud applications, often without the sanction of IT. The Jive Apps Market, which can be accessed directly from the Jive 5 platform, allows businesses to deploy these innovative apps with one click, in a way that provides scalability, security and ease of use that is IT-approved.

Over 100 companies are developing Jive Apps using the Jive Apps SDK so they can build business applications connected to the enterprise social graph. Many of the most innovative cloud companies today such as Appirio, Box, Gliffy, Lingotek, Roundpegg, Rypple, SalesCrunch, SlideRocket, SurveyGizmo and Tungle are featured launch partners for the Jive Apps Market.

Integration with OffiSync: Brings Complete Social Experience to Microsoft Desktop

Based on integration with the recently-acquired partner OffiSync, customers will be able to access Jive 5 straight from their familiar user interface, including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office. Much of the knowledge in a company is locked away in email, Microsoft Office documents and transactional systems. Jive 5 is liberating the information from these systems by integrating seamlessly with the Microsoft environment to bring a complete social experience to the desktop.

Jive 5 will be generally available at the end of Q2 2011.
