Motorola Solutions and Verizon Wireless Partner in Public Safety as Private LMR Nets Evolve to Next Gen LTE

| February 24, 2011 | Mobility Services
| Analyst: Kathryn Weldon

Event Summary

February 23, 2011 -- Motorola Solutions and Verizon Wireless forge an alliance to bring advantages of an advanced wireless communication solution to public safety customers across the U.S. The solution combines a private public safety-controlled broadband network tailored for mission critical operations with the Verizon Wireless public LTE network, providing public safety agencies benefits from economies of scale, optimized network design and increased capacity and coverage.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Verizon Wireless and Motorola Solutions alliance to provide a complementary solution set to advance the use of private and public LTE by public safety organizations as an evolution path from private LMR systems. Public safety organizations will benefit from reliable mobile broadband connectivity for voice, data and rich media. The alliance essentially provides service integration, giving public safety organizations access to Verizon networks like any other customer, but with the applications and authentication transparency they need.

• Vendor Importance: High to Motorola Solutions and to Verizon Wireless. The newly launched group at Motorola had publicly stated that next gen LTE was a high priority and would be a significant differentiator, leveraging Motorola’s existing lead in providing communication solutions for public safety organizations. Verizon Wireless gets to leverage its lead in U.S. 4G LTE with a solution that brings with it a large market opportunity to serve government customers across local, regional and national boundaries – a unique use case for 4G.

• Market Impact: High on government mobility as the solution requires technical and operational integration, including options for device management, provisioning, authentication, and SIM card personalization. The use by public safety will provide credibility for Verizon’s new LTE network, not only in the government sector but for commercial enterprise apps. The partnership will be difficult to copy by competitors given the amount of work already completed. The move also may cut out carrier competitors from using D-Block spectrum for commercial deals. However, other integrators could potentially work with AT&T or other carriers going forward; Motorola may also have to work with others if asked for by the customer. In addition, public safety agencies may be hesitant to commit to this solution while they’re still building out their networks and while Verizon LTE coverage is still building out.
