Sidera Networks Expands to Three-Tiered Ethernet CoS Model

| May 26, 2011 | Network Access and VPN Services
| Analyst: Brian Washburn

Event Summary

May 23 & 24, 2011 - Sidera Networks’ Switched Ethernet service now offers three CoS tiers, with associated SLA performance guarantees that let customers prioritize traffic at Layer 2. Sidera offers CoS-based, end-to-end guarantees on latency, jitter and service availability; the highest CoS tier can support voice, video and high-frequency trading. Sidera has separately announced partnerships with fiber-based providers Allied Fiber in the U.S. and Exponential-e in the UK; and announced a Chicago metro fiber expansion reaching westward to Aurora, IL.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Moderate on Sidera Networks’ introduction of Layer 2 CoS support for its Ethernet services, because even though the carrier is years behind large competitors in adding support, its geographic network and customer base made an Ethernet CoS upgrade less pressing. Sidera did need the service for its wholesale clients, now that switched Ethernet NNIs are standardizing. Sidera may get some new enterprise opportunities from the upgrade, but some existing customers may choose to migrate from dedicated to less expensive switched Ethernet.

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to Sidera Networks, because optical Ethernet services pricing is highly competitive, particularly in the business-dense northeast/mid-Atlantic U.S. where the company operates. Customers will be able to trust their performance-sensitive applications to less expensive switched Ethernet services: but it’s not a huge motivator if customers are saving, say, a thousand dollars or less per month compared to buying dedicated service. Adding CoS does benefit customers that need to build performance-sensitive mesh networks with large numbers of endpoints; and wholesale customers that want lower metro/access costs.

• Market Impact: Moderate to competitors operating in the business-dense U.S. corridor from Maine to Washington, D.C., because Sidera Networks’ addition of CoS support for its switched Ethernet service will appeal to wholesalers looking to save on costs, and will improve the company’s prospects in going after enterprise businesses running larger, more complex networks. Sidera’s primary advantage is its strong regional fiber network, which includes dense metro networks and lit buildings in the greater New York City area. The company is principally challenged by incumbent carrier Verizon, but also Optimum Lightpath and increasingly, Lightower.

Sidera Networks Enhances Flexibility of Ethernet Services

Class of Service allows customers to select different service levels to meet business needs

New York – May 23, 2011 – Sidera Networks, the premier provider of fiber optic-based network solutions, announced today it has enhanced its Switched Ethernet service by offering three Class of Service (CoS) options with guaranteed service levels to allow customers to prioritize traffic over the Sidera network.

Sidera’s CoS options deliver end-to-end performance based on low latency, jitter and availability characteristics. Sidera leverages Quality of Service (QoS) technology to tag and move data securely through its high-capacity network. QoS defines prioritization capabilities to give precedence to time-sensitive applications such as streaming video, voice, and high frequency trading over those applications that are less time sensitive, such as email and data archiving.

“Our new Class of Service options give customers the flexibility to choose the appropriate priority for their traffic,” said Mike Sicoli, CEO, Sidera Networks. “Today’s announcement demonstrates Sidera’s commitment to offer customers performance and price options best suited to meet their needs, whether that be to support Internet access, cloud or other applications.”

Sidera’s Ethernet service combines the reliability and ubiquity of Ethernet with next-generation metro area transport technology to deliver an efficient, fully restorable and easily managed network service. With point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-multipoint solutions available, Sidera’s Ethernet service enables customers to seamlessly extend their Ethernet network both within a metro area and around the globe.

Sidera Networks Expands to Western Suburbs of Chicago

Advanced fiber optic network delivers reliability, low latency and redundancy to the education, healthcare and financial services enterprises in the western suburbs of Chicago

New York – May 24, 2011 – Sidera Networks, the premier provider of fiber optic-based network solutions, announced today it has completed its expansion out to the suburbs west of Chicago to address the increasing demand for reliable, scalable connectivity from education, healthcare and financial services businesses in this region.

Designed and built exclusively by Sidera’s expert team, the network will leverage unique-rights-of-way from downtown Chicago to Aurora and offer ultra low-latency connectivity through switched and dedicated Ethernet, Wavelength and Dark Fiber services.

“We have seen an increasing demand for our scalable, ultra low-latency network in the suburbs west of Chicago. This expansion provides connectivity to a key data center in the area and is well positioned to serve additional data centers along the route. This new fiber-based network offers healthcare and educational institutions access to a first-class network infrastructure,” said Mike Sicoli, CEO of Sidera Networks. “Sidera has been serving downtown Chicago for many years and this expansion is a clear example of our commitment to continuously enhance our capabilities and to extend our network reach – making our customer-focused approach available to more clients.”

The Chicago Medical District, which includes world-class medical centers and hospitals, can now benefit from superior connectivity speeds and increased bandwidth from Sidera’s network to facilitate applications such as PACS imaging, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as well as telehealth solutions.

In addition, educational institutions in this area can now optimize research, distance learning and video conferencing solutions with the flexibility and scalability of the network. Sidera’s network infrastructure has been designed to meet the unique security measures and bandwidth fluctuations in education environments.

Sidera Network’s fiber-optic connectivity will also provide a strategic advantage to the financial services industry with its diversity and unique, low-latency path.
