Sprint Raises Its Security Game with CompuCom Partnership

| Mar 21, 2011 | Security Services
| Analyst: Amy Larsen DeCarlo

Event Summary

March 17, 2011 -- Sprint has announced an expanded portfolio of managed security solutions for businesses. Through partner CompuCom, Sprint Managed Security Solutions delivers a more extensive set of network security solutions that include unified threat management (UTM), secure log management, vulnerability monitoring, and PCI-DSS scanning and assessment. Spring is also offering a host-based anti-virus/anti-spam solution. The services are available immediately.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Moderate on Sprint’s addition of new security services delivered through partner CompuCom, because the carrier can now bundle unified threat management (UTM), vulnerability management, and compliance capabilities with its existing security and network services. Sprint can now offer a more comprehensive solution set, which should appeal to a broad set of customers with distributed and often under-protected network environments. The new services should be especially attractive to customers in the retail and financial services vertical industries. That said, Sprint is behind many of its rivals that have had more complete managed security services suites for some time

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to Sprint because the CompuCom partnership makes it possible for the carrier to come to market immediately with a more fully-realized security services portfolio. This in turn will help the company compete in contracts where customers require a one-stop networking and security solution. Increasingly, customers are looking for – and getting – comprehensive managed security services directly from their carriers. Sprint will now be able to deliver to those customer expectations.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the managed security services sector and for managed IT services as a whole, because many of Sprint’s rivals are already offering managed security suites of their own. Some of Sprint's large global competitors have made security-related acquisitions over the years, and have grown their managed security services talent in-house over time. While Sprint had to source its more advanced security services from a third party, the new offers will make the carrier instantly competitive for customers.
