Symantec Finally Plugs Endpoint Holes Drilled by More Sophisticated Malware (Kind Of)

| Feb 17, 2011 | Enterprise Security
| Analyst: Paula Musich

Event Summary

February 15, 2011 -- Symantec introduced its answer to the increasingly effective new slate of malware with the beta release of its Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 in versions for both large enterprises and SMBs. The release, four years in the making, draws on the company’s Insight cloud-based reputation system and new file whitelisting techniques, both designed to address new and mutating threats more quickly while delivering much greater performance.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Symantec’s SEP 12 launch, because it demonstrates that Symantec indeed can innovate to solve big security problems on endpoints, including virtualized endpoints. SEP 12, four years in the making, takes a fresh approach to thwarting constantly mutating malware, without exacting a performance penalty, and helps to re-establish Symantec as a technology as well as market leader.

• Vendor Importance: High to Symantec, because SEP 12 is a critical release for the company that will be shipped in multiple languages to some 200 countries around the globe. It represents Symantec’s somewhat tardy response to the increasing effectiveness of malware to do an end-run around endpoint protection, and it has the potential to put some new luster into the rather tarnished reputation of enterprise anti-malware solutions.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the endpoint protection market, because Symantec is already the market leader, and its SEP 12 launch with the Insight foundation stands to reinforce that leadership, without necessarily expanding the market. Still, with increasing calls for new and innovative alternatives to the status quo, Symantec has an opportunity to show that it does not take a fast-moving, innovative startup to shake up the market.
