Motorola DROID 3 Adds Power and Display Tech to Thin QWERTY Formula

| Jul 11, 2011 | Consumer Devices
| Analyst: Avi Greengart

Event Summary

July 7, 2011 -- Verizon Wireless and Motorola are launching the DROID 3, the world’s thinnest full QWERTY smartphone. Equipped with Android 2.3, the DROID 3 by Motorola features a dual-core 1GHz processor, a four-inch qHD display, a roomy five-row QWERTY keyboard, an 8MP camera, and 3G mobile hotspot capabilities, with the ability to connect up to five WiFi-enabled devices. DROID 3 is available now for online orders, and it will be available at retail by July 14 for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Very positive on Motorola’s DROID 3, because a significant segment of the market demands physical QWERTY keyboards, but this market segment has been underserved at the high end. The DROID 3 is relatively heavy and lacks LTE 4G, but it has top-of-the-line specifications in all other respects, including a dual-core processor, a large qHD resolution touchscreen, and the latest phone-specific build of Android, all packed into a thin case with a full five-row QWERTY keyboard.

• Vendor Importance: Very high to Motorola Mobility, which is still on shaky financial ground as a newly independent phone & set-top box company. Motorola built its comeback around DROID-branded Android phones at Verizon Wireless, and while it is attempting to reduce its reliance on high-end devices at that carrier, the DROID line is still the company’s bread and butter.

• Market Impact: Low on the smartphone market, because the DROID 3 may be a significant refinement of the DROID line, but it is still just another iteration of Motorola’s successful thin/Android/QWERTY/DROID brand formula. If Motorola’s rivals did not learn that there is a market for the hot-selling DROID and the DROID 2, a successful DROID 3 is unlikely to wake them up further. Why Samsung, HTC, or LG does not offer something similar (especially at AT&T) is a mystery.
