Ericsson Demonstrates Commercial Ready HSPA+ Just in Time for the Big Show
Event SummaryJanuary 31, 2011 - Ericsson announced three different HSPA+ demonstrations: multi-carrier 168 Mbps HSPA+, dual carrier 84 Mbps HSPA+, and single carrier 42 Mbps HSPA+. All three demonstrations were conducted using commercially available infrastructure. Quick Take
Analytical Summary• Current Perspective: Positive on Ericsson’s HSPA+ demonstrations, as it shows the vendor’s continued commitment to the evolution of HSPA+, while highlighting the use of commercial ready gear shows the vendor is ready to deliver on that commitment. Single carrier 42 Mbps HSPA+ should appeal to operators looking to maximize their spectrum assets. Unfortunately the use of non-commercial devices for the 84 Mbps and 168 Mbps HSPA+ demonstrations shows that the entire ecosystem hasn’t caught up to Ericsson’s HSPA+ ambitions. • Vendor Importance: High to Ericsson, because maintaining its 3GPP market leadership position requires it to continue to push the performance level of HSPA+. LTE might be the long-term future of the mobile industry, but as recent events have shown with T-Mobile U.S. calling its HSPA+ network 4G and the ITU’s subsequent agreement with the operator on HSPA+ classification, HSPA+ is still gaining momentum. The use of commercial gear in the demonstrations shows that these speeds are real, and the vendor is ready to deliver on them. • Market Impact: Moderate on the HSPA+ market as Ericsson’s “first” most likely will be met or surpassed in the near future by its competitors, likely at this year’s Mobile World Congress. One only has to look back as far back as the 2010 Mobile World Congress where Huawei and Ericsson both demonstrated 84 Mbps HSPA+, and Nokia Siemens Networks bested them both with a 112Mbps HSPA+ demonstration.
