Mobile World Congress 2011
Juniper’s Open, Partnership Approach to Mobile Video Optimization
Event SummaryFebruary 13, 2011 – Juniper announced at Mobile World Congress 2011 that it is expanding its Media Flow portfolio with a solution for mobile video optimization. Partnering with Openwave Systems, Juniper's solution combines the Juniper Service Delivery Gateway (SDG) running on its MX 3D Universal Edge Router with the Openwave Media Optimizer, and the Juniper Media Flow Controller. Quick Take
Analytical Summary• Current Perspective: Positive on Juniper’s expansion of its Media Flow portfolio to include video optimization, because it provides further evidence that Juniper is a serious contender in the video delivery infrastructure space. Although not alone in leveraging its routing portfolio for mobile video optimization, Juniper’s approach of decentralized policy-based traffic optimization and video transcoding, (by hosting the Juniper Service Delivery Gateway and Openwave Media Optimizer on its MX 3D routers) is differentiated from traditional appliance-based approaches. By offering intelligent caching, compression and transcoding, Juniper can claim to deliver significant cost savings to operator RAN investments. • Vendor Importance: Very high to Juniper as the mobile video optimization announcement at Mobile World Congress 2011 aligns with its MobileNext mobile packet core announcement, which leverage the Junos Space program that enables third parties to develop software for the Junos operating system. Juniper needed a differentiated way to compete in the video infrastructure market, and by tapping into third-party software, such as Openwave’s video traffic optimization technology, Juniper is able to accelerate support of critical capabilities in its MX 3D-hosted SDG policy management solution. • Market Impact: Very high on the digital media and routing segments of the service provider infrastructure markets, because Juniper is doubling down on a distributed, policy-based approach to mobile video optimization. By integrating transcoding software in its edge routers, Juniper challenges established multi-screen encoder vendors with a more cost-efficient solution. Juniper also offers a differentiated approach to the more centralized transcoding implementation of Cisco’s MOVE framework, which virtualizes transcoding software across its UCS platform. Finally, Juniper is demonstrating that it can rapidly incorporate additional functionality to enhance its offering, a potential contrast to Ericsson’s exclusive agreement with Akamai to incorporate content acceleration software in a joint solution.
