Oracle's New WebLogic Capabilities Help Exalogic Support Middleware, Database

| Dec 5, 2011 | Application Platforms
| Analyst: Charlotte Dunlap

Event Summary

December 1, 2011 -- Oracle announced Oracle WebLogic Server 12c, the latest release of the application server for conventional systems, engineered systems, and cloud environments. As the center piece of Oracle’s Cloud Application Foundation and a core part of the Oracle Fusion Middleware product family, Oracle WebLogic Server continues to deliver innovative new capabilities for building, deploying, and running Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) applications.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Oracle’s announcement of WebLogic Server 12c, because the new version addresses developer-centric and cloud-centric issues through enhancements and advanced technology integrations that include its distributed data grid as well as deployment and management improvements. Oracle’s application server represents the beginnings of a next-generation foundational middleware platform that automates and eases deployment and management functionality. Unfortunately, little mention is being made about the application server’s ability to support mobile application development, which is top of mind for many of Oracle's enterprise customers.

• Vendor Importance: Very high to Oracle, because the company needed to show progress in integrating its application server with its engineered systems — integrated solutions which ultimately represent the lowest-cost option for deploying and operating Oracle’s application platforms. WebLogic Server is still a work in progress (e.g., 12c needs to be integrated with Oracle Fusion Middleware); however, this kind of support for standards-based development and integration with its engineered systems will help drive interest in its private cloud platform, Exalogic, and pave the way for Oracle’s bread-and-butter middleware, application, and database technologies to be supported in its private cloud offering.

• Market Impact: High on the application platforms marketplace, because Oracle is delivering significant value-add to its market-leading app server, focused on easing development, management, and deployment (via the cloud) for large enterprises. Oracle’s updated app server will have less market impact, however, on those vendors that are emphasizing open source support, lightweight frameworks, and low-cost options in their app server deliverables, including VMware and Red Hat.
