PKWARE Takes the Pain Out of DLP Operation, Especially for Symantec DLP

Event Summary
September 14, 2011 – File compression and encryption provider PKWARE announced a new option to encrypt files automatically that contain sensitive information and are found to violate security policies upon DLP inspection. The new SecureZIP for DLP works initially with Symantec’s DLP server component, but the company also announced an API that enables integration with any DLP product.
Quick Take
Analytical Summary
• Current Perspective: Positive on PKWARE’s SecureZIP for DLP and open API, because it opens up new opportunities to expand its share of wallet among existing customers that use DLP products from the leading DLP providers, starting first with the 800-pound DLP gorilla, Symantec, but likely to include the other likely suspects in the not-too-distant future.
• Vendor Importance: High to PKWARE, because it provides new growth opportunities for the company in the DLP market, which is growing about 20% a year, and because it is starting with the largest DLP installed base in the market. Low to Symantec, because it has little skin in this integration and fields its own lineup of encryption products via its PGP and Guardian Edge acquisitions.
• Market Impact: Moderate on the encryption and DLP markets, because PKWARE is not a large encryption player and the benefits for now strictly apply to Symantec DLP customers, although that will change as more DLP vendors exploit the API.
