Tellabs’ SmartCore 9200 Stands Up to the Edge – Filling in the Blanks| Sep 30, 2011 | Transport and Routing Infrastructure Event SummarySeptember 27, 2011 – Tellabs introduces the SmartCore 9200 Series, a content-aware IP edge router for massive scale (up to 1 Tbps/slot) and support for network applications, with the flexibility to accommodate third-party applications. The system runs Tellabs’ new GeniOS and builds on the capabilities of the 8600, 8800 and 9100 platforms to deliver a solution to meet unpredictable user service demands. Release 1 delivers scalable support for Layer 2/3 edge routing and 100G/slot. Quick Take
Analytical Summary• Current Perspective: Very positive on Tellabs’ SmartCore 9200 Series router family, because the company continues to expand its footprint in the mobile backhaul, edge routing and mobile core market segments with a highly capable and flexible service aware edge solution. The system leverages the heritage of the popular 8600/8800 series routers and SmartCore 9100; but through the use of “SmartCards”, adds a scalable level of application processing in order to address capabilities such as mobile core, security, DPI, traffic classification and management, and network analytics. The system is managed by Tellabs’ 8000 INM, which manages all of the company’s gear, furthering its appeal. However, despite the reference in the platform’s announcement of terabit per slot scalability, release 1 provides the ability to deliver 100G/slot performance. • Vendor Importance: Very high to Tellabs, because the new platform represents a major step forward and a very significant investment in the company’s SmartCore technology. The new platform positions the vendor to compete at scale with the major players in the industry. Perhaps equally important as scale is the flexibility of the platform to provide a range of SmartCards, which can take on applications such as mobile packet core, DPI and security to enable fixed and mobile operators to deliver highly differentiated services cost-effectively. The system is also somewhat defensive, as it serves as a migration path for current 8800 series customers who will need greater capabilities – although the company continues to enhance that platform as well; likewise it offers SmartCore 9100 customers a higher scale mobile core evolution with greater application capabilities. • Market Impact: High on the service provider edge routing, mobile backhaul and mobile packet core markets, because Tellabs can leverage its strong presence in mobile backhaul and metro transport to compete at the service provider edge effectively. Although there are multiple solutions and architectures being proposed to service providers, a common theme is the realization that the edge will continue to be the battleground, and the service aware edge router will be the vehicle to lean on to deliver service scale and application intelligence, and to host more converged network services. As with most multi-dimensional systems, the functionality provided in the first release will enable service providers to deploy the platform to scale their edge networks with improved analytics, and follow on with applications such as mobile packet core at a later date.
