Verizon Expands VoIP Services in Asia

| Nov 18, 2011 | Voice and Unified Communications Services
| Analyst: Cindy Whelan

Event Summary

November 14, 2011 – Verizon launches VoIP services in Australia, Hong Kong, India and Singapore. The new services will support Verizon’s shared trunking solution, Burstable Enterprise Shared Trunking (BEST), as well as its VoIP Enterprise Routing (VIPER) feature. VIPER, which supports high-definition voice and video services, eliminates metered (i.e., per-minute) calling rates for U.S. domestic and international long-distance calls between Verizon VoIP customers.

Quick Take

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Verizon’s expansion of IP trunking and features such as BEST and VIPER to Asia, because SIP trunking is a foundational service that is being increasingly adopted by enterprise customers seeking to gain cost savings and support for advanced unified communications environments. Verizon’s solution supports the carrier’s Burstable Enterprise Shared Trunking (BEST) and VoIP Enabled Routing (VIPER) features, both of which support cost savings; it brings Verizon VoIP directly to Asia-Pacific locations, adding visibility and service management through Verizon's customer portal. Verizon offered Hosted IP Centrex (HIPC) in Australia for several years as a standalone; the service is now being integrated into Verizon’s global VoIP platform.

• Vendor Importance:
High to Verizon, because the carrier is executing on a planned expansion that will strengthen its offer in growing markets in Asia. Verizon has been enhancing its VoIP features and extending services into Europe. The carrier’s increased service availability in Asia extends a common platform and feature set to enterprise customers' Asia-Pacific locations, and gains cost savings through BEST and VIPER. Verizon gains an advantage over global competitors that have been slower to extend end-to-end VoIP services in the region.

• Market Impact: Moderate on the market for global VoIP solutions because Verizon is adding service in four Asia-Pacific markets, but does not include key countries such as Japan, China (outside Hong Kong) or Korea, and adds SIP trunking but not HIPC or IP Integrated Access (with the exception of Australia, where HIPC was already available). However, end-to-end multinational SIP trunking solutions are still not yet widely available throughout Asia. NTT has recently launched a multinational offer, but carriers such as Telstra, SingTel and Reliance largely compete with SIP trunking in their home countries.
