Session Border Controllers

Though the session management market has largely been a one-company show (Acme Packet) for the past few years, the expected surge in growth over the first half of the current decade, which is heavily associated with the increase of IP-oriented session-based services on mobile networks, is attracting the interest of dozens of equipment makers. The lure of billions of IP-based sessions across mobile networks and the continued convergence of different types of core networks is causing session management equipment makers to contemplate dozens of configuration and deployment scenarios in order to get an edge on the competition.

One of the key technology and deployment options equipment makers are facing in the coming years is the well-documented debate between standalone approaches and distributed or embedded approaches. The use of dedicated hardware vs. open systems is another question facing session management equipment makers and eventually their customers. Finally, both equipment makers and operators are likely to spend considerable consternation over the next few years in figuring out the optimal location for transcoding capabilities.

Product Assessment reports from Current Analysis provide a timely and in-depth evaluation on how leading products and services in a market measure up to their competition.
