Remote access used to be about extending the VPN out to the home worker, road warrior or remote office over broadband (ADSL/ Ethernet) and dial-up links, but the rise of wireless broadband has caused a shift in competitive focus. The race is now on to provide the most comprehensive suite of remote access options, including wide-area cellular and WLAN (both aggregated and ‘public’), from a single client software, with device-centric security services to boot. Global carriers are looking at a completely new learning curve.
