Q4 2007 Worldwide Wireless LAN & Mesh Market Shares
Voice Applications Continue to Drive Adoption of WLANs in the Enterprise

RENO, NV and STERLING, VA – February 22, 2008 – Synergy Research Group and Current Analysis today announced the availability of the Synergy Q4 2007 Worldwide Wireless LAN and Mesh Market Share report. Q4 year-over-year sales for Enterprise WLAN equipment were up 10%, driven primarily by strength in sales for next-generation centralized infrastructure. Total sales for WLAN and mesh equipment increased 2% quarter to quarter to $1.21 billion and were up 16% in 2007 compared to 2006.

"Overall, the market for WLAN infrastructure continues to be positively impacted by general enterprise adoption and the continued growth in the size of average enterprise deployments; growth is also being driven by applications such as mobile VoIP, location services, and guest access," says Aaron Vance, Senior Analyst at Synergy Research Group. "The market has significant growth potential going forward as enterprises transition from distributed networks to more centralized, manageable, and secure architectures."

In Q4, the market for VoWLAN phones climbed 10% to $17.1 million while year-over-year sales were up 35%. Growth in the quarter was driven by Cisco, which shipped nearly twice as many phones in Q4 as it did in Q2. Nonetheless, Synergy anticipates that sales of single-mode VoWLAN handsets will soon wane given the anticipation of dual-mode phones with both WLAN (WiFi) and cellular (e.g., GSM, etc.) capabilities.

The market for service provider WiFi mesh nodes increased 6% in the quarter to $171.3 million and grew 96% compared to 2006. Market share leaders for the year were Tropos, Strix, BelAir, Alvarion, and Nortel. Growth in this segment is being driven by service provider and municipal deployments worldwide.
