40G continued its decade-long run as a hot topic at OFC/NFOEC,
but for the second straight year shared attention with 100G
developments. However, news of PIC development could be yet
another thorn in the side of the market’s “establishment”.
Nortel talked up the results of yet another 100G experiment.
However, while previous trials used prototype equipment,
details associated with this test indicate that the Nortel
solution is nearing market readiness, and has interested
customers.
ADVA demonstrated a new modulation format that it says helps to
address a gap in current 100G standards. However, the move
seems unlikely to create the optical market’s version of
Qualcomm.
NSN ratcheted up its 40G commitment by announcing a smaller
form factor hiT 7300 that appears specifically designed to
extend 40G to the edge of the metro network. How soon demand
will materialize appears to be an open question.
Infinera demonstrated its next generation PIC in virtual lock-
step with the roadmap it laid out at OFC/NFOEC 2008. While
impressive, a lack of details regarding commercial availability
will certainly raise questions about chip stability.
