The Digital Home:
Challenges and Opportunities

Bruce McGregor
Analyst, Digital Home Services

Stan Schatt
Senior Director of Research, Computing, Printing & Consumer Electronics

October 26, 2005

The digital home market ecosystem includes customers and the consumer electronics they purchase, content creators and service providers. Currently the desire to share digital content, specifically personal photos and videos as well as music is driving this market. While lower priced Media Center PCs have fueled sales, consumers require higher bandwidth in the home, greater interoperability and less complexity for this market to really take off.

Applications beyond home entertainment show some promise. Service providers are facing a number of challenges including new competitors and demands for increased levels of support. For this market to grow, the question of whether open standards will prevail or a particular type of product will control the digital hub must be resolved.

In this telebriefing from Current Analysis, Stan Schatt, Sr. Director of Research - Channels and Bruce McGregor, Analyst Digital Home Services address the challenges as well as the opportunities available for companies in the digital home market. Sample questions to be discussed:

  • Who are the service providers with the best triple play bundle (video, voice and data) offerings?
  • Who will be leading the charge to help consumers with service support as new technologies make the digital home more complicated?
  • What is the market impact of consumer VoIP?
  • What will the telcos' new IPTV services offer that cable and satellite TV doesn't offer today?
  • Will legacy devices and new services and devices coexist?
  • Will the PC and TV ultimately be the same device or is there merit for keeping the devices separate?
  • Has Media Center gained traction yet?
  • What are current TV sales telling us about the role of the TV in the digital home?
